Adam,
Do u you have an induction kit/filter fitted? If so the 'ssshhhh' will be coming from that as you step on the accl pedal.

Is there a loss in boost?

Northy, from IWOC...

"Q. Why does my 1997 spec. car lose power around 4-5000rpm, plus there I can hear a low resonance hum?

A. There seems to be a recognised problem with the 1997 specification cars blow off valve.
This does not shut properly under boost and thus vibrates giving the sound similar to someone blowing across the top of an open bottle. I have also heard that it can also sound like a steam train whistle in extreme circumstances!"

I think the bottle top analogy has also been described as the 'mooing' noise too - so looks like the BOVs stuck partially open with positve pressure in the inlet system. Have you got a mate with a BOV that you could temp swap over so as to cheaply diagnose the problem?
