this is a case of how big is your budget?
You could probably get the engine done for around 2k maybe cheaper?? but it could go upwards from there depending on spec, power u want and parts used, what make of parts etc

Then theres the question of all the supporting mods, IC, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, ecu, headers, ind kit etc, uprated brakes and suspension, turbo alone will be over 1k if its an MD, the ppg gearbox will also be around 2.5k iirc, then ull need a clutch to go with it

if you really want to do it right with all of the above id say budget between 8-10 grand lol, how deep your pockets are will be the deciding factor!

personally id have the money sitting waiting for the rebuild and gearbox and just slap on a 20g, fuelling mods, uprated IC, ecu and other supporting mods including a clutch and see how long it lasts, there are a good few cars running high 300's and mid 300 torque on standard transmission and engine internals......it could break first time u floor it or it could last a year or two if your lucky and sympathetic to the car driving wise

then if/when it does break go forged and ppg!

Check over on Projects. Many people including me have done forged rebuilds. Basically, the crank can stay standard, get a set of forged rods and pistons (Eagle/Wiseco is a common £500 combo), most use ACL bearings, ARP head studs and Cometic head gaskets, that's pretty much it, that's a strong block. If you plan on big big power later on, it's worth using a closed deck block as the basis for your build, but the standard open ones are fine for 400 and more AFAIK.

If you're doing a self build and can arrange your own machining locally etc, you can do it for under a grand. If you're paying for someone else's labour then 2-3 grand for a standardish build, more for forged components.

If you are getting forged engine and PPG gearbox then why hold yourself back to 400 - changing to a MD321T should see you at 450/450 for no additional cost

There is a lot of talk of lag on these bigger turbos but in reality at no point in the power band is mine any less than it was on a small and what some would say is a more responsive turbo (and highly mapped). You just notice the 'lag' a bit more because of the torrent of power that comes afterwards if you see what I mean.

I am sure some have the bigger turbos on 2.0L's and are loving them - i just cant talk from experience there cos I have the 2.5

2.5L OEM STi Short Block would this be a good base to go for a 450/450 build

I have Wiseco in my 2.5 and they work perfectly but there are lots of choices. Speak to a well known and trusted engine builder to get the low down on them and costs. Area 52 Autosport built mine

Try Alan Jeffery on here, a fully built 2.1 can be had for around £3K collected and delivered, included re-con. heads....

Chris at CDF Racing does all that stuff at the best prices I could find. Quite a lot of other recent home engine builders have been using him as well.

Or try Mark at Lateral.

Just tell him what you want from the car, and hell advise on the best parts for you.
