VF35 P15 to P20 exhaust housing change
#3
Here's the scenario...Ive got a VF35 to replace the VF23 on my V3 sti ra. I popped into Turbo Dynamics today to have the turbo checked over and told the guy that i intended to replace the VF23 for the VF35.
He said that because of the roller bearing design and the P20 exhaust housing of the VF23 as opposed to the thrust bearing and P15 exhaust housing of the VF35 it wasnt much on an upgrade.
So by changing the 2 exhaust housings i take it id lose spool but gain abit more at the top?

I think the VF35 will spool up much earlier than the VF23, but power will be similar.
I doubt you'll get any more power from the P20, because the VF35 can make as much as the compressor wheel will allow on the P15 anyway.
If you really wanted to try anything, it would be the P18, but I still think it would be a wasted effort.
We're getting 500bhp from a housing similar to the P18, so 350bhp from the P15 isn't an issue.
Mark.

Unless I'm mistaken you can't just bolt (clamp) an earlier VF2x P18/P20 exhaust housing to a VF35 core, the recess in the housing/insert on the core is deeper on the new turbos IYSWIM.

Oh god, that is a really hard subject and not something I can give a quick and glib answer to....
I could not fault the green when i was using it, it is a great turbo and good value. But, and it is a big but now, the more I get the map sorted for the md321 for my car the more I love the response from the BB turbo and the usability of it. Both road and chassis dyno's agree with my butt dyno in the performance stakes and the stopwatch confirms this too. It would be very hard changing back and despite the extra money for the 321 I believe it is worth it.
Thankfully I have the pleasure of having a great engine that Area 52 Autosport have built for me that has allowed me to really take it to an extreme without ever grumbling (i think you can call 2.5 bar and approximately 2500 track miles this year extreme )
