Default hunting idle

On a friends standard MY00 UK turbo..

The car used to occassionally rev up to 1500rpm and back down to normal, sort of once in a journey.

I changed the MAF for the one off my MY00 turbo (my car runs fine) and I removed the ISCV and cleaned it up and now the car doesn't rev up to 1500rpm but instead still hunts up and down but from normal idle down to almost stalling level over and over, also smells a bit rich. It only does this now and then when you come to a stop, sometimes goes a day without doing it!

Any other ideas?

There is only 2 sensors which cause the idle to hunt and thats the maf sensor and the lamda sensor. Just because the maf is working ok in your car it doesn't mean its 100%. I would still put a brand new maf sensor in his car and see what happens.

Judging by your sig I assume your car is a JDM and if so the maf is different to the UK one as far as I'm aware ???

My car is MY00 2000 Turbo, uk spec. My sig relates to my weekend toy.

What I should have done is reset the ecu though! I'm wondering if this will be enough to sort it.

I have tried 2 other MAF's in the car (as I keep a spare myself)

I didn't even realise you could do the 'plugs under the dash' ecu reset on 99/00 cars! After a search it seems you can.

Could be the Throttle Positioner Sensor out of adjustment/corroded terminal connector.

I've always thought it was:

MAF knackered = runs lean

Lambda knackered = runs rich
