Standard Turbo
Hi guys,
I have a standard WRX Import MY93....does anyone know what Turbo it should have as standard??
It has a TD05H but I was under the impression that this is not the standard turbo!
Also does anyone know what ECU should be used with this turbo??
Many thanks for any advice.
Cheers

U8 should be on the cover. Or at least my 93 WRX did when standard. I think all early WRX's used a TD05h turbo, I'm sure they didn't start using smaller turbo units until late 1996.

Yep U8 is in there!!
So it appears to be completely standard...that's ok!
Quick question then....any idea what turbo should be used with a Z4 ECU??

I did mate, you're absolutely right!! But I was told then that a standard WRX has a smaller turbo on it and to upgrade to the TD05...so I bought a TD05 and when I took my old turbo off it was identical!!!!

Just bolting a larger turbo on isn't necessary. As already said your current set up could be pushed to 300. If I were you I'd first decide what you want to get from the car then research what mod's (if any) you need.
So what do you want to do with the car?
I've just been reading through old threads. You should really research. And listen to what people ('in the know') say. You'll save yourself lots of time, effort, and cash my mate.

I wanted a turbo that would kick in later on in rev range...my mate had an STi 555 which kicked in at about 3500 RPM so when he was just going around town it wasn't always spooling up, plus boosted later and for longer.
That was pretty much it really!!
Plus I wanted to get to 300 BHP.

I just want it to boost for longer!!
I've got a Z4 ECU to go on but I didn't realise you could map those!!
Decat causes issues with the MOT doesn't it??

Depends when your car was built. If it's a 93 no problem as cars made in that year did not need to have one fitted.
They can be mapped, but they do have to be altered first by means of a plug-in chip. The mapper can make the turbo boost longer when he/she does their thing..

With the decat/mot issue i take it to my local Nationwide autocentre because
1: I get a discount as they are an official vendor on another forum i use
2: The MOT tester showed me that they is no match for the early impreza on the database (the emission rules are open to so much interpretation for the early imprezas)
3: I normally get tea when i go there

I just wanna say thanks for your comments guys...they've been helpful and I now have some direction....cheers
Any idea how much it would cost to chip the U8 ECU mate??
Also could you point me in the direction of somewhere that might be able to do it for me?? Would I gain anything by chipping the U8 instead of using the Z4???
Also...where's this place that supplies you with tea while they do your MOT?!?!?!

PolarPerformance can provide a generic chip (£200) or a fully remappable solution (£500ish) (a better option imo).
Enduring Solutions Limited have a suppliers list on their website for the remappable solution.
Basically the chip takes over the fuelling, boost from the OEM settings whilst retaining the OEM safety features so there is no advantage in chipping the z4 instead of the U8.
My local Nationwide centre in Poole do it simply because the guy who does it owns an impreza,he has a colleague that has 1 and next door to them there are a couple more impreza owners so it's a bit of camaraderie

Or just stick the Z4 on and that should be 260bhp ish.
Name slips my mind at the moment. There is someone on here who has used a Z4 with a boost controller and fuel cut defender and has got 320 bhp ish (no mapping was done). I'm not saying this is the best way, just demonstrating there is more than one way to tune your car.

That would be mickywrx, even he doesn't advise his route but still pretty impressive imo

That's the bloke...
Disclaimer: Mickys way may work but it also may kill your car to death, I dan83590 does not recommend this method..
