I have the same problem, there is a cough at about 4k, then it shoots up to the redline, I have a 1995 wrx. If you search, a few people have or have had the same problem, including robsw and Scott T. Nobody seems to have found the answer, maybe an ecu bug?

think im going to clean the boost solenoid out today ive done this before but not cleaned through all the hoses attatched to it then this week ill get some new spark plugs cause looks like the previous owner had them fitted at a garage so maybe not gapped propperly or crap plugs, a friend has a l reg wrx same mods apart from the ecu & his is so responsive so comparing mine & theres something not right. when you do the ecu check does it come up with the codes straight away i did a ecu reset the other week when i changed fuels & flashed equal after 2 mins of driving which is ok but when i fitted the new ecu yesterday & a decat middle section i reset the ecu again & it seem to come up with a problem code only after fitting these mods though & 2 minutes of driving
