Default Heater Matrix questions MY98

I have found that I am losing water and have a damp carpet in the drivers footwell. Putting 2 and 2 together I would imagine its the heater matrix that is leaking.

No water in the oil, no water/steam from the exhaust and no signs of any leaks anywhere else. Car runs at it always has.

So far I have bypassed the heater circuit and will be monitoring the water level to see if it is being used elsewhere, heaven forbid!

From reading on here, it looks like a dash out job to change it. Has anyone managed to change just the core without removing the whole dash? I think JGM mentioned sometime ago that the core could be removed if you are prepared to re-pipe the matrix.

Also, who sells the core itself? New if possible.

Cheers for any help,

Wayne.

Default Heater matrix

Sounds very familiar as I had similar problems with my MY99. Coolant loss, minimal at first, but progressively worse.
No white exhaust smoke and the car running as normal. Eventually a smell of antifreeze coming into the car and damp carpets.

Decided to fit a new heater matrix, as I didn't want to risk fitting a second hand part and risking a dash out again.
I couldn't source the heater matrix from anyone so had to go to Subaru, I think it was around £230, which seemed rather expensive.

It was about six hours for a dash out job, but at the back of my mind was the reassuring thought that at least there was no engine damage.

yup, sounds very much like the heater matrix has gone.

You would be lucky to find anyone other than Subaru to source the part from, as there isn't a big enough demand for them to warrent someone having a replica made.

If you have a Turbo 2000 98my, then I,m afraid that the current price from
Subaru is £329.07
