Default coil packs?

got a little problem with my 95 wrx ra.when cruising along in 5th gear i can sometimes feel the car loose power slightly but if i accelerate a bit it picks up again.also sometimes when i pull away in first theres a really bad hesitation and then it just shoots off.this is really annoying me.it had new plugs put in a few months ago so could it be a faulty coil pack? my mechanic said it could be the maf so i replaced it with a second hand one but made no difference.anyone experienced this problem?
thanks for any help.

Worth checking the coil packs for cracks as you can do it yourself.

Pull the rubber boot off and inspect each one VERY closely, replacing the plugs could have weakened them even more so esp if they are the original set. They get brittle with age.
If you find cracks put a bit of electrical tape round the ends and re fit boot just to tied you over mind till you source new ones.

Remove the airbox and they are quite easy to see/remove.
Other side remove the washer bottle
