Default BOOST GAUGE/OIL PRESSURE GAUGE

Hi lads,

Just bought a boost gauge and oil pressure gauge and was delivered yesterday (With a-pillar pod).

Just wondering how to fit it on a classic wrx N plate. I heard there is a spare nipple in the engine bay. whereabouts would this be located, and what does it look like? Dont want to get the wrong one if thats possible. Guessing I need some samco?

Also, there seems to be some electrical wiring coming out of the back im presuming its for the backlighting... where would I power this to?

thanks in advance

anyone fitted their boost gauges on a classic..? Would save me lot of time if I knew where the nipple went and where the power wires go, as well as the gromet to bring the samco in through..

The nipple is on the inlet manifold, left hand side to the front, with a black cover over it. The same one on the other side will already have a pipe coming out of t.
Can't find the picture at the moment.

You'll have a live, earth and illumination as mentioned.
Use a multimeter to test where you want to put them, as it depends on location.
If they are going in the middle somewhere, you can get all the connections from the back of the cig lighter.

what do u mean by multimeter test? to check which bit of the cig lighter is the 12v and illumination? They are to go on the a-pillar so is there anywhere convenient i could put them? so the nipple is near the dump valve?

Yes, use a multimeter, as I don't know the colour of the wires to use. If going in the a pillar, you can get some from the steering column.Whatevers easiest for you.
The nipples not near the dump valve. Its to the left of the alternator, on the inlet manifold.

getting some samco/high pressure hosing after work 2day- do you know what size they normally are? havent got the gauge handy otherwise could have just seen if it fit. THey say they have 3, 5, 6, or 8mm hosing (high pressure vacuum hosing)

sorry, can't find the link or a suitable engine bay picture for the life of me.
The cover on the nipple is like a BIC pen's lid, might help.

From memory I used a mixture of 3 and 4mm for my boost hoses, so go for the 3mm.

On top of the inlet manifold there are 3 pipes (circled in pic). The one on the left is blanked off, this is where your boost gauge is connected.

excellent mike.. thanks for that. i'll have a look at it in a minute.

Just got back and had a look at my gauges.. theyve got two wires coming out of each, into a small square block with "epicenter" written on it, and then the two wires (red and white) come out again. There doesnt appear to be an earth wire which is odd.

just check the engine bay after looking at this pic..

the blank piece of the inlet manifold is actually where the top of my dumpvalve is connected through vacuum hosing.

should i use a t-piece?

also, as i said i only have red and white wires- any ideas on which is which?

i was advised theres a nipple on the inlet mani- however the vacuum hose frm my bov connects onto that. Im guessing I should fit a t-piece into that wire..?

Cheers

Yeah, you can t-piece from that. The nipple on the IM is just the easiest way to do it.

cheers joey.

Just out of curiosity.. when you said theres a nipple on inlet mani- is that for people who havent fitted a bov, or theyve fitted it onto a diff pipe?

Perhaps its only on the later classic manifolds that the nipple is free. All of the BOV's, even the standard ones have to be recirculated into the IM somewhere to prevent the car from stalling.
Post up a picture of your engine if you want, and we can look it over for the pipe.

i'll get a t-piece and put it onto the hosing that goes to the dump valve. last thing is the issue with the lighting of the gauge. theres just white and red (i got multimeter yesterday). im guessing white is for the earth, red will be 12v. i was expecting a 3rd illumination wire, however it probably always going to be lit now?

and yeah i think i'll get a pic up of the engine bay asap !

Sorry don't know the colours, as they are different in different places.
I'd use the multimeter to look for an ignition live, then look for a live with the lights on only, and I think the earths are black, but don't quote me on that. I always go by trial and error. Not blown anything up yet
Not the best way, but this is how I'd work with a multimeter or test lamp:
To look for an ignition live, I'd connect the end of the test lamp to one of the plugs, without stripping disturbing wires, and turn the ignition on. If I get a live, use that.
Same for the illumination, which is normally yellow or orange on some cars. Connect to a plug, turn on the lights etc.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific.
