Question Intercooler spray bottle on a classic - where?!!

Hi, can anybody with a V4 or V5 STi tell me (or preferably show me) where the intercooler water bottle and pump are situated please? Isn't it in front of the battery? And if it is, is there a special bracket to mount it, and how is the tubing routed up to the bonnet undertray?

Many thanks.

If you have I.C. spray fitted to your car, the bottle will be situated the opposite side of the engine bay to the battery, just behind the headlamp.

If, when you look in this area, all you can see is a large metal block with loads of small metal pipes screwed into it, then you dont have I.C, you have anti-lock brakes instead (you can't have both)

That's great information, Phil, thanks.

When you say you "can't" have both, is that just because there's nowhere to mount the bottle and pump as well as the anti-lock brakes paraphanalia ?

In which case, are you saying that no classic STi had ABS?

cheers

There was simply no standard car with both of those.
Of course you can install water spray anyway, putting the tank somewhere else - i.e. you can use big 12l N-group tank mounted behind passengers seats, in the boot.

And as far as I know just type R/RA classic Subarus have water spray in standard, instead of ABS, which place it takes.

Cheers

Blimey ok Ami, thanks for that, i had no idea that was the case. That'll explain why mine doesn't have it then, i thought i was missing something!!

So is it worth installing? Heard claims of 15bhp gains?

Sorry for the confusion.... I mean that "from the factory" you can't have both, because as you say, the ABS module & IC spray bottle share the same space.... There is nothing to stop you fitting a kit elseware if you want to.

As for STi's not having ABS, the opposite is usually true... STi's were generally built for the domestic market in Japan so most were fitted with ABS.. It's the RA that was destined to become a rally car, so they were fitted with IC as std & ABS was omitted, as rally cars do not run anti lock brakes.

The above is the case for classic cars only.

If you own a road car that is either Std or slightly modified & fit a kit with an expectation of generally gaining 15bhp you will be very disappointed with the results.

The IC system can be beneficial when the car has sat idling for a while (especially on a hot day), as you get heat soak in the intercooler and that saps power if you then decide to "Launch" the car away from the lights etc so a squirt of water before hand can help. but once you are up and running the air passing through the intercooler cools it off very quickly, so using a water spray at this point has virtually no effect.

I rarely switch mine on, the standard bottle is empty after not very long when driving enthusiastically , leaving a IC spray light on on the dash.
