ok.... I had Idler pulley 1 (BOTTOM LEFT HAND) borken and working it's way through the timing belt casing... not good. also on checking all other bearings, the Cogged bearings and tensioner bearing had alot of play in them along with my timing belt being stretched.
Replace all this now, and i have lost the rumble pulley noise, but still have loudish when driving tappet noise.... You can hear it so loud through the exhaust manifold!!

Sounds like its done more than 20,000 if the Idler has broken, they normally last a lot longer than that.
Any signs of a front end smash at some time and the impact has damaged the cam pulleys,Cam belt, idlers etc.
The thrust faces on the camshafts tend to break if the cam/cam pulley is hit from the front.

My 2002 V8 STi (import, Blobeye) has the same tappet noise from the rear left side. Getting the cam-belt, pulleys, tensioner and the cam-oil seals all changed this week. If you find out what it is or anyone else knows then I would also love to know.

You really need to have the people doing the work to remove the cam cover that side and check the valve clearances, cam cap torque and look for signs of oil starvation to the cams and cam journals in the head.
It has been occasionally known for the filter in the oil banjo bolt on the AVCS Solenoids to block up with dirt/sealant/carbon partical's - this causes oil starvation to the AVCS Pulleys and front cam journals. You normally get the engine management light on with this problem as the AVCS Pulleys will not advance/retard.

Head off, no damage found, i've been told it could possibly be a bruised piston!!!... although the sound def sounded like a tappet noise that was coming from the head!!
