Default Running / overfuelling problem 97 STI

I am trying to help my friend with a running problem on his 97 STI wagon.

The car starts and runs ... Sometimes fine and sometimes a little lumpy. When driving it seems fine until you give it some welly. Then as you come off the power it coughs and splutters and throws out black smoke. It will then eventually cut out. Leave it for a bit and then it will go again.

Suggested items ... Air flow meter, Boost control valve???

It is like it is overfuelling.

Any help much appreciated ... No fault codes coming up on ECU

I would suggest changing the air flow meter.
