Default De limiting and converting MY97

Hi folks

I'm looking for a definitive answer to this one, I've been told by some folk I need a chip that goes into the wiring in the dashboard and by others that I need a converter that goes onto the gearbox end of the speedo cable? Which is it really and where should I get it from?

Thanks in advance.

Both are correct depending on which year WRX you have. Early JDM cars (black OEM dials) have a cable operated speedometer (UK cars have similar looking clocks but are electronic). When JDM cars were facelifted with the Forester dash and white clocks they adopted an electronic drive.

It's a 97 STi v3? Will I go with the one on the gearbox?

I went with the convertor behind the clock, just unplugged the speedo cable from back of clocks, attached convertor and plugged speedo cable back in.
