Default difference between new age{04}and classic downpipe?.

i have just bought a full decat 3inch system for my 04sti.the downpipe went up ok but the mounting bracket to the gearbox was sitting bout an inch too low.fitted the back box fine.the center section mountewd on the rubber and to the rear box fine, but was too short to reach the downpipe.have i been sent a downpipe for a classic, or is it the center that is wrong?. thanks in advance, pete.

The classic downpipe is alot longer than the newage one (at a guess atleast 8" maybe 15"?)

Is it a well known make?

weird

I have both newage and classic downpipes in my shed if you want me to compare their lengths. I had a 03 type UK STI that I changed the d/p on and same with my classic.

Classics have a three-part exhaust (downpipe, centre section and backbox) while new-ages as far as Hawkeyes have a four-part system (downpipe, cat pipe, centre and backbox). On a newage the downpipe and cat pipe replace the downpipe of the classic, but are a few inches longer in total. Since the two backboxes are the same length then the centre section of the newage is shorter than that on a classic so that the overall length of the whole system is the same.

Diagrammatically (if this works), from front to back:

Classic:
|_____________||__________________||_________[___]_

Newage:
|_______||________|_______________||_________[___]_

That help?

ok.

Just measure the exhaust bits I have.

The classic downpipe is 18" longer than the newage d/p.

The classic centre section is 49.5"
The newage centre is 53"

These lengths were measured in a straight line from flange to flange and not following the contours of the pipe.

Hope this helps

thats a great help mate.even tho i bought the whole system.u can just buy the center and rear.with that being the case,with the origonal downpipe in place,the center section would deffinatly not be long enough.pretty sure it must be the center section thats wrong. many thanks for going out of your way to help me,cheers ,pete.
