Default STi Wagon Ver4/Ver3 advice.

Hi chaps.

A friend of mine is looking to buy an STi Version 4 wagon, or possibly a version 3.

Is there anything that he should look out for on these?

And as with all imports, it's a bit of a gamble, so he's only looking at standard examples.

So any advice the two would be appreciated, do they have any serious/expensive problems, how do they handle high mileage?

He'll be looking at cars with 30/40k miles on them, but it'll probably be double that after two years, as it'll be a daily driver.

All advice and input will be greatly appreciated, cheers.

Anyone have any advice?

I'm relying on you guys as I can't find out any substantial info about the Ver3/Ver4 STi.

Again, all advice and input is much appreciated, cheers.

Cheers for that, Banny.

Is the STi Ver3/4 wagon running 280ps then?

They're running 300PS according to this:

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...tml?showfull=1

GF8D5ED 300 WRX STi3 5 door
GF8E5ED 300 WRX STi4 5 door

Or is that not accurate.

The Ver2 figures on the list are accurate:

GF8C58D 260 WRX STi2 5 door

The importer also lists 300PS on the description of all their Ver3/4s, so I'm a bit confused?

Still, 280ps is nothing to be laughed at if that's what it's running, and it's still up on the Ver2 as I expected.

I'm most interested in the reliability of the Ver3/4 really, as that's the main factor, an engine rebuild isn't something that would be welcomed

The examples he's looking at appear to be mint, with 30/40k miles on them, standard engine, but I can't find anything out about their reliability, the only thing search has returned are threads about the bottom end going, but it's the same reliable block, so it might just be a case of them being thrashed by idiots.

And since they're imports, you don't have a lot to fall back on if they go bang, so reliability is #1 main priority.

So any input on that aspect will be greatly appreciated, MPG/Service intervals would be nice as well, cheers lads

perhaps a totaly different slant, but y not have a scoob and a shead run around?

get a nice scoob for the weekend, then an old 1.5td corsa or similar as a run around in the week?

no worrying about parking it in carparks etc etc, and before folsk say that'll be expensive to run two cars, it costs me less to run my rover run around during the week and scoob as weekend toy than just the scoob if i were to use it to go to work and back everyday. especialy witht he cost of fuel getting stupid

He doesn't have the room to park two cars, and the reason he wants a wagon is so he can use it for work and enjoy it every day

He's not the sort of person that would buy a nice car only to drive something crap 80% of the year.

He has a forester at the moment, but wants something faster now.

I can see where you're coming from, making the scoob last longer etc.

But if it's not his daily driver, there is no point, he'll use it for work for 5 days a week, then perhaps fishing on saturday or sunday, he doesn't go anywhere else

Wagons are very useful, and great everyday cars. Would recommend considering an LPG conversoin with current fuel prices, and of course a remap

Runing cost are high on these cars.

Tub of good quality fully synthetic oil is around £50 (maybe you can get cheaper)

The engine are reliable based on how you treat and drive them.

Driving them hard all the time, there is the threat of the bottom end of the engine going which is very expensive to put right. Check for any knocking noises (there a plenty of youtube vids of this)

The standard dump valve can go faulty on the impreza's

If you want the car to be reliable, it will be judged on how well you take car of your scooby.

Don't let this put you off, these cars are really rewarding to drive!

Cheers for all the input so far

It's all very much appreciated

Does anyone know when to change the cambelt (is it the usual 60k?), fuel filter, g/box, rear diff oil etc.

The servicing schedule for everything really.

The oil is every 3k, correct?

Cheers
