just been out for a short drive nothing spirited. parked on drive and noticed smoke coming from the bonnet scoop.
from what i can see there is what looks like breathed oil sitting where the turbo inlet pipe meets the turbo and this goes down until it meets the block.

this is the causeof the smoke. my worry is why its developed.

ive done a search and theres no smoke from my exhaust so i think my turbos ok. ive checked the breather hoses and the only one with oil in is the one that feeds in from the collector pipes that run across the front of the intercooler but this does have a bit in.

the only option i can see is too take of the intercooler and clean it up and then see what happens

any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Mitsubishi TD04 turbo on the 2002 wrx is well known for leaking oil from the seals. Normally it's most noticeable when removing/changing intercoolers as it 'pools' up in the hose from the turbo to the i/c, in the i/c and the outlet hose to the inlet manifold.

I can't say i've ever noticed oil in the inlet side of the turbo before though, were you parked with the nose pointing downhill?

 

by the way, a small amout of oil leakage from the TD04 is perfectly normal....
