Question How to tell a WRX from an STI????

Ok been having a look around for a Subaru.

Prices seem, well - all over the place.

Anyone able to enlighten me on how to identify a WRX grey import from a genuine WRX STI import?? Is there a guide or something.

BTW - I'm talking about CLASSICS only

Thanks.

Best bet is search on here for generic chassis numbers to differ WRX/STi not sure what you mean about grey imports over genuine import ? Classic STi's are imports I thought.

Ta. A little lost on the whole import thing. An import is an import, I just didn't grey down the 2nd time, but its still the same thing, as in not UK/Euro type approved and privately imported and registered under a SVA or similar.

I might have it wrong, but I understood that until 2001 when the new age model arrived ALL UK Impreza's where Turbo 2000 models.

A WRX would therefore be an import from Japan, as would a WRX STI.

I guess what I was after are some pointers on being able to ID a real STI and not just a bog standard WRX dressed up to look like an STI.

AFAIK All classic sti's and wrx's are imports and they were not sold in the uk. A uk Impreza turbo is called a turbo 2000. A very small number of wrx's were registered as uk cars in the early 90's. Some 22b sti's were also sold in the uk. Check out the sidc website there is loads of info on there! Give it a few minutes though as someone will be along to correct me shortly.

None of the classics imports were six speed, the 6 speed gearbox was introduced from the newage cars.

As above check chasis number stamped on passenger side under bonnet this will tell you exactly what the car is the code breaks down to tell you the year , saloon / wagon , wrx ,sti , Ra ect !!! as wrx and sti have totally different numbers .

Also check the lable on the safety belt as this also has the year written on it , if the lable has been cut off be a bit suspicious !

Default sti bloodline

also try this The Bloodline of Impreza STi Version
also when driving the gearbox is quick shift, steering is quick rack(shorter lock to lock), the engine in a wrx runs out of steam but a sti will rev all the way no probs and as other people say red inlet manifold, carbon front strut brace, sti seats, red stiching on gear **** and steering wheel.
