You can use a 10w-50 synthetic - (its a good compromise between cold temp thickness and hot temp thickness) but you'll struggle finding it straight off the shelf at a local motor factors. So you'll probably have to order it in on-line.
Subaru use 10w-40 semi-synthetic. That used on what looks like a pretty standard car will fine, so long as its not driven hard regulary or has runs on the track and you adhere strictly to the 6month/7.5K change intervals.
15w-50 is easier to get hold of, but the expense is that its not so good in cold winter temps.
You will not find 10w-40 in full synthetic; the closest grade is 5w-40, which is fine; as it works better in the cold.

No point anyway, as 5w-40 is better; Same hot viscosity, but works better when cold
Thats why most 40 grade synthetics are classed as 5w-40. As they have to abilty to work over a wider temperature range.
