Question is it a sti or wrx

i have recently bought a 1992 wrx any way i blew the big end now i have the engine out some one mentioned to me that they thought it was a sti engine that was in my car how would i no if it is when the timming belt cover came off they said it had the metal pullies and this i possibly a sti engine

as far as i am a were the only way to tell the differance between the engines is when u open them up cos sti have forged pistons and crank. dont hold me to this like i could be wrong and if i am then i am sure some1 else with say so!

Have a look for your engine number, believe on the block near where the Gearbox attaches, under the intercooler, pass side.

have a look on here for numbers relating to engines....

AFAIK the very early cars all had the metal pulleys. I think they are actually heavier than the slightly later plastic ones. If you pull it apart and have forged pistons, then it's an STi block. You may have a closed deck block on a very early car like yours - it will have cross hatching in the casting above the oil cooler.

it dose have the markings of a close deck block the engine im going to be putting in is an open deck block tho but going to keep the power down so not much to worry about cheers
