version 3 sti import fecked do i need same engine or can i fit version 5

short motor yes, long motor including heads no - not without a lot of work

Providing you are careful which head gaskets to use. V3/4 pistons stick out the top of the bores and V5 stop short of the top of the bores. If you use STi 3/4 gaskets with V5 short motor then you'll have 7.7:1 compression - not ideal....
