Question

I read with interest in another thread about your Thermocouple installation and would welcome some advice on how you did this as I would like to monitor EGT too.

Did you purchase a Guage or build your own ala John Banks?

Am I right in assuming that the Thermocouple must not be earthed (ie probe must be insulated from ground)? In which case how did you fix & hold/seal the thermocouple in place?

Also what V ranges does the thermocouple produce & do you need to amplify this before connection to a Guage etc.

Any help or advice gratefully appreciated by us DIY tight-wads

Cheers,

Chris

I use a handheld monitor,(approx £30) this is not a permanent fixture in my car and is really only going to be used for tuning purposes. I use the same monitor to view EGT and charge temp pre and post intercooler.

You can buy proper round pod mount gauges but in the UK they tend to be quite expensive.
They are available in the states from $25 ! Summitracing.com have a wide range.
There is no problem earthing the thermocouple as it is encased in a 1.5mm diameter stainless sleeve. I have it entered into the 1.5mm hole I drilled, it's a tight fit so it doesn't move, however I've added a blob of exhaust sealing paste just to make sure.

The thermocouple is a 'K' type, I'm not sure how you would go about
reading the output without a 'K' type monitor or gauge.

I'm sure someone will

Question

Dare I ask how long your probe is?

Assuming you have only inserted 8mm I was just wondering how much was outside & whether this was in the way or can it be very gently bent?

I suppose pictures are out of the question?

Cheers,

Chris.

I wonder how long it will take for the muppets to catch on to this thread - ohh err missus

The way I find out technical info is to google search read the links and hunt for datasheets/application notes/PDFs etc.

Also looking on components suppliers like RSwww.com and then finding products and login and you get datasheet links.

The answer will not be far away. Please post your findings - will be interesting.

The probe is 150mm long with a 2 metre cable, which means it is a handy length to clip to the wastegate actuator to prevent movement. Yes it can be bent, carefully !
RS Components have a hand held K type monitor for £59.00 RS51 it's called. Part No 206-3722.

The 'K' type thermocouple has a voltage sensitivity of 41 microvolts/deg C between -200 and +1000 deg C.....if that helps ?
