Default ecu?

Hi all, my 94 import wrx has an fcon v fitted piggy backed to a prova ecu, is there a more tunable ecu by that I mean nobody but an hks dealer can tune the fcon and being from Japan probably different anyhow. Main issue is that there is no mass airflow anymore just map sensor. Could I go down the apexi route like many on here do?.......Dont want another melted piston!
