Default Rev limiter

I accelerated earlier hard in 2nd gear onto a dual carriageway and accidentally hit 7000 rpm. This is the first time I've hit the rev limiter in this car and as soon as I got to 7000 the engine halted really abruptly and the engine speed slowed down to a much lower level.

It made me jump as when I've hit rev limiters in all my previous cars it's been a lot softer and bounced around the red line a bit. In the Subaru it just seemed to slow the car down a huge amount in less than a second

Is that normal for an Impreza?

If it put your head nearly through the windscreen then it's fuel cut.

I've hit the the rev limiter and it is quite harsh (93wrx)

Isn't the fuel cut the same as the rev limiter? Not nearly through the windscreen but it did really stop the engine in its tracks for a second.

Thanks JimmyBFC. Does the bouncing off the rev limiter thing not really happen with Imprezas? It just seemed much more different do rev limiters I've hit before but as long as everything's normal I'm happy

Shouldn't do what you describe is normally fuel surge, when you don't have much petrol in the tank.

mmm that's interesting, I had just come off a roundabout and cornered hard before accelerating on to the dual carriageway. maybe it's to do with that. It has got a quarter of a tank in the car.

It wasn't a very good feeling, as the car felt like it died momentarily, but after that everything was fine.

Rev limiter is not a hard cut like that, it is possible to bounce it off the rev limit although quite why you would want to do that normally. I appreciate that this was due to a 2nd gear acceleration.

Fuel cut is unlikely to happen in 2nd gear as it is generally when the car is overboosting and because the load is lower in 2nd, you probably dont make full boost. Much more likely in 5th.

Sounds to me like fuel supply caused it - possibly from a failing fuel pump that cant supply enough fuel at the top end and maybe not helped by some surge out of the roundabout.

Thanks Dynamix. I thought I'd try again seeing what happens if I went to 7000rpm again (for experimental purposes). I tried 2nd gear again but this time on a straight road. This time the car bounced off the limiter as I would've expected the first time.

That means before it must've been some kind of fuel supply problem. When it's going in for its service I'll ask Subaru to determine if there's a problem with the fuel pump.

Is it an expensive and involved job?

Thanks.

changing the fuel pump is an hour tops or less if you know what you are doing.
