Default Tapping 2.5 conversion

Can someone help? just completed a 2.5 conversion using a brand new block and my existing version 5 type r heads, started her up and am now getting a tapping noise from the passenger side cylinder head, heads were striped and cleaned of any blockages before assembly, as i know the oil restrictor can get blocked. Apart from the tapping engine seems to be running fine.Im using a good running in oil (Millers). Any ideas?
Thanks Ryan

does the tapping get faster as you rev the engine? did you drop a bucket/shim at all when putting heads back on, it could be that you have a shim miss placed?

Hi mate, tapping dose get faster with revs, as far as i know all shims/tappets went back in there original places. I'll have to check the valve clearence to double check, can this be done with the engine in the car?
Thanks

Sounds like a missing or wrong tappet. Check all the belts are tight, when I first ran mine it sounded agricultural because the PS belt was loose.

it can be done with engine in situ but its a pita! also check the front pulley to ensure it is tight?

Also worth checking the spark plugs are tight - if one is loose, you will get a combustion leak which sounds like a noisy tappet.

On this subject we have a very similar problem, took the cam cover off yesterday found that valve clearances were correct ( type ra heads, solid lifters, shim under bucket ), but still have a really bad tapping noise. Is it possible for the shims to be incorrectly located and the clearances still look ok??

sounds like you have a shim not sitting right

That's what I thought originally but can't agree one hundred percent have had a better look tonight and had the engine running with a 'listening stick' and to be honest I don't think it is coming from the tappets. It is definately coming from the rhs of the engine area but just can't pinpoint it. with my listening stick against the rh rocker cover, the sound is the same as the lh side so now very confused.

i tried to convince myself that it was something else but in the end i removed the engine and cams and found 1 shim just not quite sitting right, there is not a lot else that taps on them unless its piston slap on big ends.

Did you measure your clearances before you took your cams out and found the shim sat incorrectly???

If so were they what you expected???

Ok.

All our clearances are within 0.001" of manufacturers tolerances so a bit reluctant to remove the cams (engine is in the car now) and have the exhaust buckets slide out.
