Its easier to take it out and do the job instead of struggling to get the left hand head bolts out for starters.
You can see what your doing.
You can check the clutch while its out.
You can have a good look round the engine when its out and fix any little oil leaks there might be.
Just my 2 pence worth

Yes it would be easier, but if you can raise the engine a couple of inches you dont have to struggle with the bolts. Obviously if you do have the luxury of an engine lift then you would be foolish not to use it, but for those who havent (like myself) you can still do the job. So back to the original question, Yes it can be done

Well having hired an engine crane to pull my engine out for a rebuild, I would never hesitate to do so again if I needed to get at the heads. I wouldn't dream of trying it with the engine in the bay, although no doubt it could be done.

How easy is it do the HD if you haven't done it before?
I have my engine out of the car on a stand so access is not a problem!
