Default Impreza WRX STI Type R - Engine

Does anyone know how difficult it is to dismantle the engine on a 1997 wrx sti type r to find out if bottom end is shot? any ideas would be much appreciated or any info on how to diagnose what parts are at fault?

The 'bottom end' on a Scooby is actually the very middle of the engine, the absolute last thing you get to when you dismantle it. You're basically looking at the same job as an engine teardown and rebuild, plus whatever parts are needed. Almost certainly you will need a new crankshaft, main and big end bearings.

Drain the oil and run it through a paint filter to see if you catch any bits of bearing etc....

A paper coffee filter will do, if Asda is the only place open.!

I drained the oil first of all on mine. Apart from a slightly metallic sheen, there was nothing there. When I finally got to the big end bearing it was totally wrecked as was the crank pin. So lack of debris in the oil doesn't necessarily mean you won't still have to open up the engine.
