mpg with K+N
#1
Can someone please advise me as to a possible problem?
My MY97 UK impreza has always averaged 18 to 19 mpg(driving very carefull ) on mainly B roads. Best = 20 mpg on motorway, sat at 70 MPH. Since fitting K+N induction kit i'm now getting 16 mpg (still driving very carefully) 13-14 mpg if i boot her.
Is this normal or could their be possible MAS or O2 sensor failure, if so is their any checks i can do
Also on a few occassions she would not start from hot or cold, with bad smell of petrol engine turning ok
Thanx in advance STU

Just fitted my K+N Kit this w/e, too early to say as yet but it doesn't look good for the mpg.
Accelerate, change gear 'whoosh', hey! I like that!, slow down, speed up, change gear, whoosh! get the idea?
Seriously it shouldn't make any difference should it?

Mornin'
I do not have a K&N ind kit, mine is a Pipercross kit, i changed the backbox to a Mongoose item @ the same time. Mine is an my99 BTW
I found my average MPG increased from 23 to 25 after fitting and now from 25-27 with Optimax.
I have spoken with a few other people who have changed to an induction kit and i am sure that most found an inporvement.

I have a UK MY98 with KN panel and Magnex Back box. Currently I get about...
23mpg average town driving.
27mpg best on a motorway run.
21mpg Lowest B road blat.
I should get your car checked out b4 you blame the filter.
I have noticed since changing the BB that my MPG has gone down 1 or 2 MPG but thats due to the great noise that it makes at high revs and changing down early .
Cheers

I changed from a JR panel filter to a Blitz induction kit and have noticed quiet a drop in mpg.
Used to get about 23-24mpg around town. Now down to 20-21pmg. This may not seem a lot, but when you consider this is about 40-50 miles less per fill-up you tend to notice.
I have two theories as to what might be happening - or could be total b*ll*cks of course:
1) MAF sensor detects increased air flow and alters fueling accordingly to prevent from running lean
2) Using the go faster pedal more, as the car is far more responsive and even more fun to drive.
I reckon it is probably a combination of both.
Cheers
