Default Which mods?

Just a few questions for future reference.

What is the SAFE boost limit on a standard engine for everyday use? I dont want it blowing up, and would just fitting a proper boost controller(not a bleed valve) do the trick or would i need an FCD?

Also my air filter is real cheap garbage, so what works well on a 95 WRX?

I also intend on changing my exhaust for a Blitz Nur Spec R and greddy up-pipe. What are your opinions on these?

Realistically i want a reliable 280-290bhp so what do you think i should do and is that easily acheivable? But most of all it has to stay reliable!

I dont want to sound like a fool but i'm new to the scooby world so just want find out what i can do with it safely!

Adam,

I'm sort of in the same boat wanting to keep my car reliable while increasing power and response. I also want to keep the fuel consumption as low as possible and keep the noise down! I've had my MY00 for nearly 3 years and have just started the mods:
GFB underdriven pulleys- no noticeable difference, but look nice! Fitted by Conders Subaru in Peterborough at no extra while having cambelt done.
K&N panel filter- read the ScoobyNet Project Car story in the articles section, better result just changing this than pissing about with expensive induction kits!
Power Engineering T75 backbox- again, no noticeable difference apart from the noise! Hopefully this box will come into play with the next stage.
Will be fitting a Scoobyworld Ninja sports cat this weekend, followed by a fast flow centre section (with muffler) if I can find one. This will be followed up by an ECUTek remap.
The above combined should add about 30bhp I hope with better low-end pick up.

As for just increasing the boost, not wise on its own- stuffing more air into the engine will need to be matched with various other parameters to keep everything sweet. Best to get expert advise from a specialist Subaru tuning outfit.

Slim

before you staert modding get the car a health check (a quick session on a rolling road will help).

the Nur Spec R is fecking loud and i don't see any reason to change the up pipe unless it's fecked/blowing.

Boost increase will normally require a check of how well the car is fuelling as the fuel pump in the car may be getting very tired (unless it's been replaced) and whacking up the boost without checking is asking for trouble on an old car.
If you do turn up the boost 1.1 is a relatively safe level but don't stay messing around with FCD.
Getting a remappable solution (aftermarket ECU or daughterboard) will be your best option imo (www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk can map and supply)

Cheers guys! ITs not that i'm going to do it straight away, Just making plans for the future.

I live in herefordshire so does anyone know where i can get a health check done without travelling for hours? I dont know of anywhere that has a 4wd RR. I'm guessing Birmingham is probably the closest?

Stage one upgrade on a scooby is generally, decat/sports cat exhaust, uprated panel filter, upgraded fuel pump and Ecutek remap. Usually around the 270ish bhp mark and similar torque. This is the best route in terms of gains/drivability and definitely the best in terms of maintaining reliability.

I wouldn't advise going down the FCD and Dawes route. Power costs and short cuts usually mean shortened engine life! If you must use the latter method, make sure you get someone with a wideband AFR and det cans to make sure the fueling is adequate for the increased boost or the next post you make may well be asking us how much for an engine rebuild.

he has an import so the ecutek remap won't work (as far as i know) the car is rated at 256bhp any way (most probably lost a few because of the age though)

I wouldnt alter the boost alone..Too much boost and not enough fuel leeds to one thing....Det!

Your best off with a remap to "up" your current boost.. a few psi done with a mbc aint worth the risk..

You could use a generic map for mild mods, but i would recomend a det alarm or at least a check over with a wide band.

Oh didn't realise it was a 95. There are other remapping options options though i.e daughterboards or replacements ECUs
