Would that be visual check for security of attachment and leaks?
I think from reading on here, the loop hole is pre September 1995 cars and emissions. If the exact model cannot be found on the testers emissions machine, then a pre cat test is to be done where the emissions allowed are slightly higher. However, it still needs to pass this catted or Decat.
Post Sept 95 cars, regardless of the fact the exact model may not be on the machine, must pass the tighter emissions test. This usually means that the car will have to have a cat (not always though).
If you are stopped by the police, they may visually check for cats, see there are none and then fine you, assuming it's going to fail emissions. I think this is how some interprate the law.
Obviously all 'internet experience' but have seen a few screen shots of MOT test guide lines with the above data on.

let us know what you find out. i plan on swapping the blitz back box for an HKS Legamax 3" stainless back box eitherway so hopefully it will go easy on the testers ears, and mine.

found out at work today about the facts on cat test's for subaru's
hope this helps
all subaru's including imports between 1st august 1992 and 31st july 1995
are in the vehicle database or in the service emmissions book
so we carry out a cat test using vehicle spec
all subaru impreza's including non turbos, uk and imports are
IDLE SPEED
max co limit(%vol) 0.5
FAST IDLE
max co limit (%vol) 0.3
max hc limit (ppm) 200
min lamda 0.97
max lamda 1.03
as for subaru's between august 1995 and 31st august 2002 the spec is the same
i've gone by the mot book but i'm sure someone will have a different view on this but hope this helps anyway

It would seem though that the testers guide book is open to a lot of interpretation. In places it can be a bit vague imo.
This recent link is one of many that talks about the legal requirements. There are a couple of flow charts on the net that I think make it a little clearer.
Would be nice to get an up to date 'definitive' answer to this though. Might be worth talking to the MOT tester you have in mind to test your car prior to taking the car. If the answers to your questions are a little vague, then look elsewhere.
Of course, the info from p12mem is probably the up to date info I was after!

So true, my local mot guy said to take the car around on a Saturday morning when they have more time to tinker with the car. No changing exhausts or anything, but just a chance to try a few tricks to get emissions down. I guess one of the main ones is to get the car really hot and then straight on to the emissions tester without waiting for a spare bay etc.

we do try get em thru, the cars i dont bother with and look even harder at are the one's with lights and washers not working, even if the washer bottle just needs filling up, if they cant be bothered fixing the simple things the main bits are gonna be pants, take it clean and make sure everything works ok and you should be fine
