Default Whistling 1k - 2k revs.

Hi everyone. Im a brand new member to this forum as I have just bought my first Subaru. My last car was an 850 T5 and my new baby is a whole world different.

There are too many questions I have to know where to start but suffice to say I have been busy on the search facility !

My biggest bugbear is a high pitched whistling starting around 1k and up whch is linked to rising or falling revs. This starts well under the boost level so I have assumed it is from the belts or pulleys at the front of the engine but sticking my head in there it seems to whistle from the rear.

Any ideas as I am still getting to know my engine.

Thanks and a couple of pics from my phone for now.

does the noise change at all?? ie get more aggressive as the revs rise or does it stay the same all the time?? does the pitch change, or the volume, if its coming from the back, do you know which side? the only thing i can think of at the back is either the clutch release bearing, the turbo or a manifold leak. I cant think of anything else yet.

Could it not just be the turbo whistleing? Does the car have an uprated air filter like a big cone filter? Mine whistles from the bottom of the revs like that, and even though you dont get full boost until maybe 3k Rpm its still working.

Yeah, high flow air filters, decatted exhausts will both increase the volume of the turbo , could also be worth checking the turbo/vacuum plumbing Hth

Cheers for the replies guys, the whisling stays the same but only on rising and falling revs when the revs are constant the wistling subsides. When its less f!* freezing Ill go over the vac system with some fairy liquid mix .

The turbo is very noisy when it kicks in at around 2.5k but I am having a little clutch drag under hard/fast changing so this may be the whistling culprit.

Cheers again.
