Default Differences between Version 7 and 8 STi JDMs?

Iv been looking into getting a new age STi... quite temped by the JDMs.

A friend has a version 8 which is nice but bit out my price bracket, however iv seen a few version 7's for decent money so am wondering what are the differences?

My friends version8 has twin scroll turbo and equal length headers, an auto setting on the center diff, (and cool clocks that self test on startup , lol).

If someone has a list or spec of differences please?

JDM V7 comes with forged pistons , V8 comes with hyperuetic pistons , so internals in V7 considered less prone to detonation and are stronger .

V7 comes with VF30 , which is similar to a VF34 except its not a ballbearing , its a sleeve type . The V8 comes with VF 39 , quicker spooling because its twin scoll and has a P25 turbine side compared with VF30 which has a P18 size turbine and is single scroll . Both roughly make the same power however .

V7 has unequal length headers , hence u get that typical boxer rumble , which is lost on the V8 which has equal length headers .

V7 no DCCD as in V8.

advantage of V7 , because its single scroll , upgraeds such as uppipe , DP , and all MHI 16g , 18g , 20g ,are straight bolt ons . The V8 , difficult to get aftermarket twin scroll DP and they are far more expensive , if u want to upgrade turbo , twin scroll after ones from APS are very expensive . If u want to go 20g , have to change headers , uppipe and stock DP .

Only advantage is the VF39 spools about 200 -300rpm sooner than a VF30. Both engines otherwise are similar . Heads are the same .

Hope this helps . My choice is a V7 because forged , cheaper to upgrade , and has the boxer rumble .

The vf39 is single scroll and was used on US sti's and later 2.5 sti's.

There is no such thing as version 7 or version 8 Subaru!

Why not refer to them by their model year?much less confusing

Maybe no official designation but most people who know their Imprezas will know the difference.

This STi 7/8/9/10 thing is just so confusing and complete *******

2000MY was STi6
2001MY wasn't STi7
2002MY wasn't STi8
2003MY wsan't STi9
2004MY wasn't STi10
2005MY wasn't STi11
2006MY wasn't STi12
and 2007 won't be STi13

The STi7/8/9... wasn't ever used by STi but has ALWAYS been misused by the aftermarket. There are differences between the various MY cars which would have been more than the differences between STi5 and 6 so should have been enough to increment the number by 1 for a MY change.

not strictly true as the 05 blobeye with the wider track is affectionately known as an STi 9 (although there is no such thing) 03-04 blob is V8 and 01-03 bug is V7

as i say none of these STi versions actually exist as they stopped at V6

Dr B, excellent.... thats exactly the sort of info i was after

Can go and read up now with a bit more knowledge.

Only other thing.... suspension and brakes, any major differences there?

(ps, sorry for any version confusion.... i was indeed comparing the 01-02 bug eye against the 03-04 blob eye )

Was waiting for this post. Have heard from a few places the hyperuetic pistons are as strong as the forged ones in the MY02, either way you don`t get many of either of em going pop, they don`t suffer from the MAF issues of the earlier ones. Internals are good enough for high 300`s anyways.
The DCCD-A whilst fun, spends most of its time in auto anyways, so not a massive selling point. Think the brakes are the same, suspension had some revisions but not sure what.
The twin scroll is only spinning a few hundred rpm earlier, but it does feel a hell of alot more responsive on the road than my old one, and that even without a descent map.
