Default difference between oils

what difference is there between the oils 5w 30 and 15w 50

is 5w 30 any good at protecting the engine at high end speeds or mainly crusing at 80 mph

There's a big difference in the viscosity of those oils. The 15/50 will seem like treacle compared to 5/30
For your car a 10/40 or 10/50 is fine. A 15/50 will be quite thick when cold and you shouldn't use a 5/30 in your car if you're going to use the performance regularly.

As John says, a 5w30 is a little thin, actually any w30 is a little thin for your car, a 5w40/10w40 10w50 or 15w50 is suitable, the 15w50 is a little thick but its about the thickest you want to put in your car, id not recommend a 10w60 oil tbh, and the 5w40 is probably the better all round oil for your car (fully synth) and the 10w40 the best semi synth.
