Question Engine Oil, Which Grade??

Which Oil should I use in my99 UK turbo?
(pretty standard apart from exhaust and Prodrive ECU)

Would like to get the oil changed but just wanted to check opinion on which make and grade.

Car has been previously serviced at Subaru main dealer who I think use Shell 10/40, should I stick with this?

Also anyone know where I might purchase a tool to hold the crank pulley whilst undoing the crank bolt. (don't need this to change the oil but would like to do a cambelt change as well.)

If its been OK on Shell 10/40 then carry on using it. I'm using Mobil 1 15/50 fully synthetic but there are cheap alternatives out there.

To undo the crank nut, put the car into 5th gear with the handbrake on tight and that should be enough to crank the crankshaft nut

Thanks for the advise.

Would I be better off getting a more expensive higher quality oil?

With regard to the crank nut that sounds fine. When i try to torque the crank nut back up will the torque setting be correct using this method?

It's always good to use a better oil, but remember, thinner isn't always better. Most well branded 10w60 & 15w50 etc..... fully synthetic should be fine like Mutol, Millers, Castrol........

Regarding torqueing the crank nut back up, it will be fine, you will be suprised how little play there is in the crank when the gearbox is in top gear.

Nice One Nick.

Thanks for the advise on the crank method sounds good.

Always confuses me the old oil choice?

So many different viscosity's recommended by different people. Don't mind paying for a decent oil but don't want to pay over the odds as long as it offers effective engine protection.

Shell Helix 10/40 is only semi-synthetic (i think)
Castrol RS 10/60 fully synthetic but also expensive!

??????????????

I think Millers CFS 10w60 is a good buy, 5ltrs for £45 odd quid, it seems to be the price you pay for a good fully synthetic

I think Halfords do a good deal on most oils, iirc, i bought my Mobil 1 there for not much over £50 for 5ltrs. Look out for the 4ltrs containers though, 4ltrs wont be enough to change your oil and filter.
