Question TRAILER TOWING ABILITY & OCTANE

Thinking about purchasing a 2001 Outback 6 cylinder with 150k and use it for towing a small camper. The owners manual says it can tow up to 2,000lbs. with trailer brakes and a tongue weight of 200 lbs or less. Do you think this is still a reality? It seems to still run quite well for the miles. Also a question about gasoline octane: Is it ABSOLUTELY necessary to run premium even if not towing? And one more item. Does this engine have a timing belt that needs regular changine like the older models? I could not find any info in the book. Thanks for any input.
