So is this metallic knock only when the engines cold on first start up?

Not saying it is or isnt but they can suffer from a bit of piston slap when cold.

I take it you pre-filled the filter ?

Could the oil be at fault or contaminated ?

??

I had the bearing go on my Legacy RS and the noise was there all the time, albeit noisier when cold. Sounded like a diesel when started first thing in the morning.
Maybe worth trying a change to thicker oil or use this
Engine and Gear Oil Additives and Supplements - Molyslip Atlantic Limited.

I've heard a few old Legacy engines with this in them and it does dull the knocking. Maybe just enough to sell it..............
