Default 2.5ltr classic's, how much oil do you burn

i seem to burn alot of oil
its burning around 1litre for every tank of petrol, however i seemed to burn nearly all the oil within 40miles (3hrs) of driving, i was driving at a max of 50mph, oil was checked day before and was low,so i topped it up,
what oil would you use for a 500bhp 2.5 classic, milage is new as just been built,
thanks

make sure you have no oil leak first ...as I had a leak from the blanking plug at the top of engine , and I lose less oil than you do in the stated miles ,
mine is a new builts as well !

who builts the engine??...as its seams excessive
if its still been run-in, oil should be semi syn, if its run-in already use something like motull 15-40 fully syn

im not going to name i would always recomend but its not good to say as the problem is unknown
what would cause this problem
if the engine is rated at 400 - 500 bhp and its over 500bhp would this cause a threat

not an expert but mine's around 460-480, and its use very little oil (only notice oil low when I had a oil leak ! ).......I think you should ask the "builder of the engine " regarding its oil useage and if its normal for the said engine .......bearing in mind that some 2.5's DO use some oil

ok
i was told it would burn more oil then a 2.0, was given 4 litres of oil by the tuner and told to keep an eye on it, i drove home from the tuner, 130miles and pasrked up, in the morning i checked the oil to see what it should be at as an indication and it was low, topped up with around a litre but left it as that, few days later another half a litre and so on, then my pressure gauge alarm went off (defi) and see that i had no oil in the car,a day prior to diving it it was fine then 40miles later 4litres of oil somehow burnt away,
its used 7-8 ltrs of oil in a months ownership, driven about 10 times altogether,

mines got about 3000 on now, burn next to nothing, did a change at 500 and after that at 2000 she's spot on.....

I'd be quite worried if your tuner gave you a pack of oil....
does she smoke at all?

do you know if you have the required oil pump upgrade?

Still I'd be very worried about that much consumption......

yep pump modified etc, no smoke etc nothing i always drive with a mate in a another car, white car and hes never said the car smokes and theres no marks of oil coming out of the exhaust as it would be on his bonnet,
if the pump failed how would the oil burn? i am not sure how the oil burns anyway

my ej25 also has wiseco pistons and does use oil

certainly not like yours though . on a trip to stratford and back and a weekend of drag racing , i do approx 500 miles and 20 - 30 1/4 mile runs it probably uses just over a litre . always carry some with me though just in case , i did get warned when i was planning the 2.5 that it would use more oil than the 2 litre
i use motul 15/50 comp fully synth as already mentioned.

There is a problem with your engine, it shouldnt use that much oil!

I have 2.5 sti with forged pistons and use about 500mil for about 500 miles of use, but that is to be expected with forged pistons which arent as tight a fit as the OE pistons.- I use motul 15w50

Take it back as the oil is way too much use even when running in.

i think its using motul 300v 15w50 (il check in a min)
i know its a problem with the engine, i just want to find out how it could be caused as its now done some serious damage i think,
thanks to defi's installed a few days prior i would never have known about the oil untill the engine blew,
the engine build is new, it was run in by the tuner, done 1000miles aprox and had the first oil change 500mile ago, i now have to get the car back to the tuner (130miles), with no money as the build cost me the best part of 20k, its about £200 for me to get it there by trailer,
just about ready to blow my top, but i need to keep calm, lol

I haven't really monitored the useage V Miles..... but should do REALLY !!

I just keep a gallon of oil in the car and check it once a week..... about lunch time after a drive to work....

The company should come and get your car, you dont spend that amount of money and be expected to trailer your own car back to them!

I've heard of this problem before i.e. 2.5 built engine, forged pistons, excessive oil usage.

Sorry to hear your big ends have gone but the engine was going to need stripped down anyway. In all likelyhood they have fitted the wrong sized pistons (too small) and the oil is getting out past them. Engines with forged piston can sound a little slappy until the pistons heat up and expand and a as a consequence use a little oil but I do mean a little, like a few ml.

I can send you a link or two to threads where this was happened before if you want.

Oh yeah, £20k??? WTF were you getting done for that? Surely not the engine build?

Best of lluck getting it sorted BTW.
