Default Lambda sensor Question

Could a duff Lambda be causing the co reading (mot) to be so far off the scale that that garages machine wouldn't take a reading?,the machine told the operator to remove exhaust probe '94 wrx by the way.

i would not of thought so, my sensor was duff and had to change it but still got a reading when it failed to mot.
