I've bought a second hand ecu that im not sure works. The lad i bought it off said his car would not start with it fitted. I've not tried it on mine as i wasn't sure if it would knacker my engine if it didn't have a good map on. Don't really want to arrange a mapping session incase the ecu doesn't work unless i have too.

It's really the only way you can be sure if the ECU is working correctly. Its possible the map was not suited to the car previous and you could have the same problem or the ecu could be faulty, the only way to be sure is to have it checked or set up when mapping.
