Default Z6 ecu

Ive got one on my car odd thing is she's a 94wrx i thought z6 was on the later facelift classics?

On another note has anyone soldered a 24pin dil socket, is it a case of removing the solder and soldering the socket in.

cheers.

Edit, sorry meant to say w6.

Are you sure you mean Z6 and not Z4. Z4 was fitted to posr Sept 1994 and was the 260ps model.
A Z4 will require the IC socket location desoldering and a socket fitting for the chip.

the W6 is a standard 240ps ecu but it has the socket already in place.

So the right ecu then, fraid she doesn't have a socket in place as the ecu is stripped apart already, got to sort a fine tipped iron for tomorrow.

Is desoldering a hard thing to manage?

quite easy to do to be honest as long as you have a solder sucker to hand, i have opened up a few w6's and u8's (240ps) and all have had the socket fitted, all z4's and z5's that i have opened have had no socket fitted!

are you fitting one of Scott's upgrade chips?

if so make sure it is a a genuine one as there are some poor chips out there with some very poor maps on!

No it isn't, but it has nothing but good reports, ive asked around and it uses a genuine subaru map anyway.

Hmm never used a solder sucker before, might have to try a test board first then, thanks for the help.

Wish me luck.

Not sure what W6 and U8's you opened but none of the ones I have done have sockets fitted unless they have already been chipped. In some cases the chip was soldered direct without a socket.

The only ECU that have sockets are V7, 7D and 6D (all UK or Euro ECU) and the STi 2 RA which uses a 7K ECU.
The early STi 1 and STi 1 RA can sometimes or have sockets or chips soldered direct, as these are already chipped by STi. These are ECU SA, SB and SC.

Practise lol, i had to re-solder a good few joints, serves me for trying to rush it, the dash flickered a bit to begin with and the fuel pump wouldn't prime along with the intercooler light.

The solder gun was a godsend. i quickly learned gun one end sucker other end, soldering took a bit of practise but she now fires up tickety boo, even tightened the fan belt that was starting to squeal.

I'll post up what she's like later on but so far things are looking good.

Thanks scott and jonny.

Wow what a difference, less of a kick but power is now much more linear, the turbo spools faster and pulls harder.

Im chuffed, should have fitted the thing sooner.

Well thing is im great with mechanics, did all the work on my 309, engine you name it but electrics have always tripped me up.

So a step in the right direction, i already know how to map cars and handle things like injector duration etc.

Who knows if i feel fancy later on i might build me one of those megasquirt ecu's.

She now drives like a scooby should from stock, old map was a bit twitchy and didn't like my 7 grade ngk's but this map loves them.

Yup, was a phase 1 cherry red then i moved onto a miami blue 309gti phase 2, which in gti form was rare as hens teeth.

She was cammed, bodied, forged pistons pretty much what you can think of she had, i spent in excess of 20k on her, loved her to bits but it was a royal pita to look after and was sucking my money and life away.

And she upset many a person.

She pushed close to 220hp

Ironically some of the best spanner monkeys i know own and work on pugs, i wonder why that is.

its cos you have to be to keep em going

i had a white 89 1.9 205 gti that i did quite a bit of work to back in the day, remember pulling the head off and porting it then fitting a high lift cam.

what a nightmare i had shimming the bloody thing, only got it right after about 3 goes

it was a great car though, loads of fun

that looks like a fantastic sleeper!!!

Yeah i miss her to bits but she took the **** so off she went.

One word that'll bring nightmares to any pug owner.

Torsion bars.

I know how to rebuild the things, i have one spare and a new rebuild kit but i need new shafts as the bearings wore out the old ones.

The 309 ones rebuild go for £350 upwards as very few like to attempt them but they're easy enough with the right scaffolding pole to drift the bearings out with.

Ironically i have sod all scoob parts but the shed is still decked with 309 parts
