Default expensive???

iv'e recently had some problems with the car, overheating (3/4 on temp gauge) and white smoke from the exhaust.had the car running few nights ago to show my dad the problem,i still had white smoke from the exhaust but temp gauge seemed ok.i turned engine off and left it to take it to the garage the following day, however when i *** to turn engine on the following morning,it wnt start!so iv had the bloke *** and see the car and hes telling me the engine has seized due to having water in the main chamber, which has been caused because of the head gasket going.i wud have thort however that if the head gasket had gone the temp gauge wud have gone thru the roof wen i had it ticking over the previous night.anyways basically wot he says i need doing is engine out, head gasket replaced, check valves to make sure ther ok (he thinks they shud be fine)and put engine back in,but whilst its out i'll be havin new clutch because it saves on labour cost. And the quote hes given is £1200,but im not sure if this includes the crank bearings.does this sound expensive??Not having a gud day!!

I would get a second opinion, if its siezed then itll need more than a pair of head gaskets and bearings, have you tried turning the engine over my hand? I think the nut on the crankshaft pulley is 22 - 24mm if I remember rightly, I would also take out the plugs to see if any water comes out and to make it easier to turn over, I think this would be very unlikely though, whats the level on your coolant resevoir?

the level seems to be fine in the coolant as at first i thought it was leaking from a coolant pipe

as far as i kno the only reason it isnt starting is because it has water in the compression chamber, not because engine has cooked

remove plugs and turn over by hand, if there is water in the chambers then it is very hard to compress water which in turn could lead to serious engine damage with plugs removed water will come out of the plug holes

As Jay has said, do not spin the engine over without first removing the plugs.

Have you been loosing water? To have a leak that bad it fills a cylinder is very unusual especially since the Scoob has an overflow, long before it filled a cylinder it would have blown out all the water through this.

Plugs out mate, turn it over on the starter to blow out any water. Give the plugs tips a heat with a burner, fire them in and get it going. Make sure the coolant system is full and get it up to temp. Is there bubbles in the small overflow resevoir? Fill up a 5ltr container and take the car for a blast along the dueller for 10 mls or so, check you levels, if youve lost no water then its not a head joint problem.
