Default coolant problem?

I have got a 2001 bug eye wagon which seems to have developed a liitle problem
All was fine until the other day and for some reason the temp guage goes up as normal to the 1/2 way mark from cold but i cannot get any warm air through the vents?

Now when the temp guage gets to 3/4 mark quite quickly i then can feel the hot air coming through the vents and the temp guage goes down to the 1/2 way mark. If I am stuck in traffic the temp guage quickly rises to just above the 3/4 mark but as soon as i start to move faster than 30mph it goes back down to the 1/2 way mark and remains there until i have to stop in traffic.

I have been told it could be the thermostat not opening fully but i am not sure but obviously i will change it as a matter of course any ideas help would be appreciated cheers

Make sure the radiator fans are kicking in as well, can test this by leaving the car running, when parked up, they should kick in when temp rises above normal.

I assume that your cooling system hasn't been drained and refilled recently, If it has then it has not been bled properly.

if it hasn't then you should try the Thermostat first, as it is the cheepest option at the moment, but I have to say that in all my years working with these cars I have only ever seen 1 of them fail.

The last couple of times that I've seen a Subaru displaying your symptoms it turned out to be Headgasket failyer.

If the new Themostat doesn't cure your problem, I sugest that you take it to a Dealer and ask them to carry out a test on your cooling system to see if one of your Head Gaskets have failed. This is a very simple test that only takes a couple mins.
