Strange ticking sound - front of engine
Bear with me on this as I am not a mechanic
Car is a Scooby Type R 1999
It seems to have developed a loud ticking sound this afternoon. Its loud enough for me to notice on tickover, but as yet no falloff in performance or anything.
As you open the bonnet there are 2 belt pulley systems in front of you both with metal covers on top. The one on the right hand side, nearest to the oil dip stick, seems to have a facing plate that rotates at speed. The noise is coming directly from this unit and the plates rotates for about 30 seconds and then stops - is that normal? At first I though the belt had come off and was catching - it was that sort of noise, but both belts are both intact and taut. There is nothing I can see that is catching anywhere, but as I aid the plate does stop rotating after a few seconds.
Thought welcome. Was considering an AA call out, but I can get to a garage in the morning, so I will wait to see if anyone on her has any ideas.

i have switched the aircon off (was on before) and no difference in the noise.
maybe the unit itself - can't tell as its tto dark now
will get it to a garage in the morning in case its something sinister.

I think your doing the right thing by having it looked at. How often do you use the air con? The reason I ask is that on my MY99 I had a ticking/squeaking noise from the same area. I ran the air con for about an 1hr while driving and it completely went, never to return. The air con does need to be used at least once a month. I am sure you are already using it to demist in the mornings. Good luck.

has been diagnosed today as a failed air con pump. Its hard to explain the noise that it was making but it sounded like the whole car was about to die.
Expensive new but managed to source a second hand one.
