Default gearbox oil

Howdy, how do i check my gear oil levels? if it needs topping up do i need special oil or normal engine oil?

excuse my stupidity.

There is a second dipstick in the engine bay for the gearbox oil level. Look around the driverside near the firewall next to the black chimney, behind the turbo. You fill the gearbox via the dipstick tube. Took me about 10 mins to find it the first time.

Depends what oil you've got in the box already, but a lot of members recommend
Castrol Syntrax 75w-90 Gear Oil 4Litres semi-syn from empty, costs around £40. It cured my notchy box anyway

Millers 75w90 is also good.
