Hi mate I get the same problem turned out to be the rear diff. It only does it when its warmed up usually after about half hour driving.
One other thing what wheels have you got on her
I brought mine it had 18" on with 45 profile tyres
I changed these to some 17" RB5 alloys and touch wood it does not do it at all I know the diff needs doing but the wheels were putting strain on it and causing the knocking now I have 17"s on it is fine although I know its needs changing because the oil is shi**y.
Hope this helps
Carl

tbh i had a feeling it was something to do with the diff, not sure how steering affects it though.
it's got standard alloys on.
how can i check the oil
would a 95 sti rear diff fit a 00sti ,if it needs replacing

because of the AWD when full lock is on it puts strain on the rear diff.
If you park with the car on a level surface get under the back end and there are two plugs on the back of the rear diff
The oil level should be just under the top plug so you should be able to take the top plug out and shouldnt loose any oil.(maybe a drip)
It should also be nice and clear goldy color. not shi**y black like mine.
Maybe do an oil change on it it will give the oil required in your manual.
Getting mine changed soon found a guy in hinckly who specializes in rebuilds etc who also rallies scooby he is a fanatic. company is XSPEC
he did my last service and said he will change the rear diff for 250 squid.
