Hi all,

Quick question for you! When starting engine from cold there is a slight knocking noise..After 5 mins the noise has completly gone and dont do it again until the next morning.. My car is a my98 uk turbo with ppp.
I have read somewhere that this year was prone to a bit of piston slap but my mind points to big end, but surley if it was the big end the noise would get worse as it get hotter or under load.. Put my mind to rest..

 

Sounds like piston slap, mines a My98 and has it, goes after 5 mins and is fine. will notice it more now due to the colder weather setting in.

Yes does sound like piston slap as that age of engine does suffer from this.... though im suprised the my00 of Deano_p1 does it as the phase 2 varients are supposed not to suffer from it..... mine deff does not.

 

So does my 02sti do it.

a bit of cold start piston slap wont do anyharm at all.

 

MY99 is fine, no piston slap here....

 

It sounds like a cam belt tensioner or idler to me.

Get it checked out or it could be an expensive problem.
