Default Exhaust related info needed

Hi, I am in the process of fitting a TSL Gp. n backbox and centre section pipe to MY99 turbo UK. I eventually got the 2 bolts off from the downpipe to centre section but the 1 sheared off, they were that rusty. I've order 2 new bolts but they don't come with the nuts. What I need to know is the size of the nuts, I am unsure whether they are 8mm metric or the equivelent imperial! I am going to get some stainless steel but just want to make sure I get right size. I take it the springs can be reused as they seem to be in OK condition?
My other question is which way round do the bolts with springs go? eg. is the larger end of bolt where the spring sits against run from front to back of car or other way round! Sorry for such dumb question but failed to take any noticed as I was getting pissed off trying to remove the rusty buggers.
Thanks for any help.
