I'm not exactly sure that the internal dials should tell the tail of the STi engine.Did the guy you bought it off have any paper work outlining the transplant say for insurance reasons? The engine should have other visual aids, like the rad cap.Does the engine have any plates on it that you could check with the DMV? I'm sure the other lads on here will have more ideas and advice bout this dude....

IHI is an STI turbo (various ones fitted depending on model year), all the WRX's have an MHI, you won't have DCCD as thats part of the gearbox and I assume he only changed the engine. ECU is probably no help as he probably kept the WRX one and has had it 'chipped'

If they have changed the ECU which is likely if they have done all the other work, then lift back the carpet, remove the plate and find out what is on the cover.
If it has an IHI turbo, it is likely to be an STI 3 on car, of which the 3 + 4 can't be chipped.
any chance of taking pictures and posting them up?

to the lights change when you move the wheel? can you feel the difference when you move the switch? when on LOCK, and moving slowly like parking, do you get strange noises?

the 6s is the sti 3 ecu
i have exactly the same thing going on with my 96 wrx , there is no paper work to prove it but it have the red inlet manifold, yellow injectors, IHI turbo, 6s ecu etc
i was told the only way to know for sure is to take the pistons out

A partial engine strip would be the only way to tell 100% if it is a true STi engine, unless you have access to an Endoscope to look inside the engine.
Cylinder Head Codes are LHB and RHB.
Valve Codes are EH and IH.
It will have Inner(under Bucket)Shims
Camshaft Codes RH4,LH4 Inlet and Exhaust.
Pistons are Forged and will have HF2/3 on the underside of the Crown.

Mine was different to what was posted for the STI V3/V4 as mine is a phase 1 V2 RA. ECU has 4 plugs on it and a 'chip' in it from STI which can be re-mapped. ECU code was SB, IIRC, can't say about later RA's as I haven't had one sorry.
