Default Turbo Cooler?

Hi all been looking around and see some cars with the metal cooler still fitted and some with it removed its the one that goes to the vent in the bonnet, the question is are they needed or not as mine is not on and would get one if they are needed mine is a 95 import. thanks,

if yours is a turbo impreza then it should have either a top mount intercooler (top of engine) or a front mount intercooler (hidden behind front bumper).
the intercooler lowers the temperature of the inlet charge as air passes through it, and by doing so makes the air denser, which gives more efficient combustion and more power.

I think you mean the heat shield that is fed from the bonnet scoop. Leave it on and it should help to reduce the heat from the turbo heating up the IC.

Or wrap the hot side of the turbo with a turbo blanket.
