Default noisy engine/rebuild time?

Car sounds unhealthy makes 2 noises one is a constant ticking from the passenger side, been told its the tappets, rocker gasket is also started to leak on that side and the other is a kind of whine like a belt is on too tight or a bearing is running dry, cars done 74k now but with full service history and runs fine any one know a rough cost for the tappets or am i as well rebuilding the full engine if its an out job anyway and anyone know any decent garages in south scotland/ayrshire area that could do it,cheers.

what year is it? The whine could be the power steering pump, they can do that when fluid levels drop (even though by looking in the reservoir it looks full)

99 sti5 could be that actually,a mate said the belts sounded tight so they were replaced and no change. If it was the pump how could i tell,is it easy to change or should i try changing the fluid first.

if it is the power steering they can leak, so its usually just a matter of topping it up with new fluid. As I say usually you look into the reservoir it will look as though there is a load of fluid there, but you would be surprised on how much it will take.

My version 4 STi motor has the exact same symptoms as yours. I think the injectors actually account for a lot of the ticking noise. I have the bearing noise as well, I rebuilt my power steering pump and replaced the belt, no fix. I think it's either the alternator or something under the timing cover. Anyways I'm not worried at this stage because the noise hasn't changed in a year and the car runs like a dream!
