Fellas,

Being a bit of a knumpty here - what is the purpose of the black curved plastic device with a small solenoid type thing attached in the lower left hand of the engine bay?

it looks like an air feed into the standard snorkel which judging by the fmic pipe work you have already removed the sensor is prob an intake air temp sensor
Personally I would look at redirecting it to feed cold air to your cone filter

Ok thanks I thought it might be some sort of air feed.

Anyone else got any ideas?

It's the cold air pipe that on a standard car feeds first the resonator box inside the wing, then that goes on to feed the airbox. As you have an induction cone on there now, the pipe and resonator don't really do anything at all. The device in the side of the pipe is an air temp sensor, found on all STis and later WRXs AFAIK.

Ok thanks. Can the air temp sensor be removed, or is it in someway connected to/signal fed to the MAF? I don't want to mess that up!!

cable tie it to the cone filter, or drill a hole in the back plate where it joins the maf and put it in there.

I thinkits a air intake temp sensor

Only JDM up to 00 STI got them, EDM models is not equipped.

i belive JDM STi airtempsensor for use with auto waterspray

the usage of water from the auto IC waterspray on my JDM V4 Sti type R V Limited is related to outside temp. On trackdriving time it dint use hardly any water (0,5L) in auto IC mode an one tankof fuel (ca40litre) (arctic circleraceway, cold), next day the sun showed up, giving only a +5 degrees outside temp rise, and i used 2 4litre watertanks to one tank of fuel. It has to readoutside airtemp for ECU and ICspray purposes. I think.
